IAAPA 2023 Recap: Free Roam VR Attractions

Missed IAAPA Orlando or just need a refresher? Here are the top Free Roam VR attractions we saw and tried at the show.

SPREE Interactive

SPREE is the long-needed answer to “What non-shooting VR games do you have?” Most Free Roam VR content — or VR content in general — available revolves around shooting in one way or another. SPREE offers an alternative with family-friendly content geared toward young kids, ages 6+. One big differentiator is that most of their games require no controllers at all, making them extremely easy to pick up for both young and older players.

If you are an FEC targeting children and families, this is the ideal VR content to get them playing together at your facility.

SPREE offers both a complete turnkey and a software-only version if you want to purchase the hardware yourself for a DIY Free Roam option.

They provide a free trial of the software-only version, so if you already have HTC Vive Focus 3 headsets (the required hardware for SPREE) in your facility, sign up here to test out the games before adding them to your attraction list.

If you are interested but don’t yet have Focus 3 headsets, contact us to get a quote, purchase and get set up with the HTC Location-Based Software Suite for free before signing up for your free trial.

Hero Zone VR

Hero Zone has been producing top-tier Free Roam VR experiences for years and they debuted some exciting new content on the show floor this year. In addition to an already stacked library of games, they previewed their upcoming Free Roam escape game and it is a ton of fun.

The Hero Zone games work best in facilities targeting slightly older kids — teenagers and above — as well as adults and corporate teams.

Hero Zone also offers both a complete turnkey and a software-only version, which can be run on Focus 3s, Quests or Pico headsets, although the Focus 3 delivers a more streamlined experience for both guests and staff.

Limitless VR from Creative Works

Creative Works is best known for producing major attractions outside of the VR space for FECs from laser tag arenas to putt putt golf courses. Now they’ve expanded their offerings to include Limitless VR, a turnkey Free Roam laser tag unit that incorporates physical walls into a virtual environment.

The Limitless system utilizes haptic feedback guns called Mavrik-Pros (more on those below) and players can create accounts from their phones, choose an avatar and choose their gun skin.

For pricing and more info on Limitless, contact Creative Works directly through their website.

Honorable mention: The Mavrik-Pro from StrikerVR

While this isn’t a whole VR attraction on its own, this is such a cool product that can be added to existing attractions. The Mavrik-Pro is a haptic gun created by StrikerVR that elevates your VR content to a premium experience — that you can charge premium $$$ for. It integrates with a handful of experiences now including the popular VR laser tag game RE:COIL from Spawnpoint with more integrations planned soon.
